Each year, the Iowa Fire Chiefs Association, Inc. sponsors, in partnership with a host fire department, its annual conference, usually in the fall of the year.  We have had a conference each year since 1951.  A small registration fee is charged.

The evening before the conference, the host department has a fellowship time for all of the visiting departments.  The next day, the conference begins, with welcoming statements by City dignitaries, the Fire Chief of the host department, State Fire Marshal, Fire Service Training Bureau Chief., and others  After which, there are very informative presentations on topics of interest and concern for chief officers.  After the conference, the Iowa Fire Chiefs Association, Inc. conducts its annual meeting.  Some of the business conducted during this is the election or reelection of new or current board members.  The spouses of the visitors are entertained by some sort of ladies program. usually shopping and a tour, with lunch provided.

ALL vendor and program inquires should be directed to the host department.

Speakers:

Brian Walsh:
Brian is the author of the book “Beyond the Mask”. As a seventeen-year-old volunteer firefighter, Brian Walsh suffered third-degree burns to his face. He was not expected to survive, but did. Brian will discuss his journey, good and bad, the importance of perseverance and motivation, and the things he learned along the way that led him to an incredible life.

Dr. Sara Jahnke:
Dr. Jahnke is Chief Operating Officer & Senior Scientist at The Center for Fire, Rescue, and EMS Health Research. Dr. Jahnke has over a decade of research experience on firefighter health, has led more than a dozen national studies on the health of the fire service, and has served on several others as a co-investigator. Her work has focused on a range of health concerns, including the health of female firefighters, behavioral health, risk of injury, cancer, cardiovascular risk factors, and substance use, with funding from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant R&D Program, the National Institutes of Health, and other foundations. Jahnke has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed medical literature.

Dr. Brittany Hollerbach:
Dr. Hollerback is an Associate Scientist and Deputy Director of The Center for Fire, Rescue, and EMS Health Research. Dr. Hollerbach has extensive experience working with the fire service on a number of federally funded firefighter studies examining behavioral health issues in the fire service including obesity, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, substance use, and mental health. She recently received FEMA funding as the Principal Investigator (PI) on a project examining firefighter perceptions of protective strategies used to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Dr. Hollerbach has an interest in firefighter health in general and translation and dissemination of firefighter health research specifically, given her background as a former firefighter. She also has experience teaching at the fire academy and is well-connected to the fire service community in Kansas City.

Sgt. Jeremy Sprague:
Sgt. Sprague is a police sergeant for the Des Moines Iowa Police Department.  He has served as a patrol officer, detective, hostage/crisis negotiator, and peer support coordinator. Jeremy designed, created, and managed the first-in-the-state public safety Peer Support Program which is used as a model for other agencies around the country.  He specializes in providing training and critical incident response around the state. Jeremy expanded his innovative peer support model and created the Peer Support Foundation which trains first responders throughout the Midwest. He currently serves as the executive director and president of the foundation.

David Hicks:
David the is Director for Youth & Shelter Services of Marshalltown. In conjunction with the Marshalltown Police Department, the MPACT program was developed. MPACT (Marshalltown Police and Community Team) is an intervention program providing service within the city of Marshalltown.  The service is a collaboration between the Marshalltown Police Department and YSS of Marshall County.  MPACT’s Community Advocates, who are highly trained human service providers, are contacted when a non-emergent non-criminal police call comes in involving mental illness, family conflict, substance abuse, or emotional/behavioral situations.  While MPACT Advocates are dispatched through the Marshalltown Police Department, they are a mobile crisis unit, not law enforcement.
